As music and musical performances shared online continue to unite the world during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael Jackson’s estate has released his live performance of “Heal The World” from the ‘Dangerous’ World Tour, integrated with imagery from these current times, as a global message of encouragement and comfort to all during this difficult period.
Jackson originally created the ‘Heal the World Foundation’ in 1992. The purpose of the charity was to provide medicine to children and fight world hunger, homelessness, child exploitation and abuse. Through his foundation, he airlifted 46 tons of supplies to Sarajevo, instituted drug and alcohol abuse education and donated millions of dollars to disadvantaged children, including the full payment of a Hungarian child’s liver transplant.
The foundation also provided underprivileged children the opportunity to visit Jackson’s Neverland Ranch to go on theme park rides.
“Heal the World” was written and composed by Jackson, and produced by he and Bruce Swedien. In 2001, Jackson said that “Heal the World” is the song he was most proud to have created. This concept of ‘betterment for all’ would become a centerpiece for the Dangerous World Tour.
An ensemble performance of “We Are the World” and “Heal the World” closed Jackson’s memorial service at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on July 7, 2009. The song was performed as rehearsed by Jackson at the venue just weeks earlier, in preparation for his planned “This Is It” concerts in London.
