City of Odessa Down With PPE

Odessa, TX – Today, Governor Greg Abbott released executive order GA-29, mandating the use of face masks across the state for all Texans residing in counties with more than 20 cases of COVID-19.  The order goes into effect at 12:01 p.m. on Friday, July 3.

The City of Odessa Communications Department created the ‘PPE’ music video for the Fourth of July weekend. It’s intent is to remind Odessans to wear their protective masks due to the current outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the Permian Basin. Levi “Smokes” Berlanga is credited with the lyrics.  City of Odessa employees appear and are making their acting debut in the video.

GA-29 requires all Texans to wear a face mask while in public buildings or when in an outdoor setting that does not allow for six feet of physical distancing. The order does not apply to anyone under 10 years of age, individuals with health conditions that prevent them from wearing a mask, or someone who is consuming food or drink. Also, those people early voting or working at polling locations, or religious services are not required to wear masks, though it is strongly encouraged.

The order also allows mayors and county judges to impose restrictions on outdoor gatherings of over 10 people, and make it mandatory, with specific exceptions, that people cannot be in groups larger than ten and a social distancing of six feet must be observed.

Violators could face up to $250 in fines. People not wearing a face mask when required may receive a written or verbal warning for their first violation.
